Succeeding the award-winning NF-R8

Succeeding the award-winning NF-R8

Noctua's NF-R8 fan has become a default-choice among PC enthusiasts looking for a premium quality quiet 80mm fan. Thanks to its thoroughgoing aerodynamic optimisations, the NF-A8 provides higher static pressure and an even better airflow/noise ratio than its much acclaimed predecessor.
Flow Acceleration Channels

Flow Acceleration Channels

The NF-A8 impeller features suction side Flow Acceleration Channels. By speeding up the airflow at the crucial outer blade regions, this measure reduces suction side flow separation and thus leads to better efficiency and lower vortex noise.
AAO Frame

AAO Frame

Noctua's AAO (Advanced Acoustic Optimisation) frames feature integrated anti-vibration pads as well as Noctua's proprietary Stepped Inlet Design and Inner Surface Microstructures, both of which further refine the fan's performance/noise efficiency.
Stepped Inlet Design

Stepped Inlet Design

Noctua's Stepped Inlet Design adds turbulence to the influx in order to facilitate the transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, which reduces tonal intake noise, improves flow attachment and increases suction capacity, especially in space-restricted environments.
Inner Surface Microstructures

Inner Surface Microstructures

With the tips of the fan blades ploughing through the boundary layer created by the Inner Surface Microstructures, flow separation from the suction side of the blades is significantly suppressed, which results in reduced blade passing noise and improved airflow and pressure efficiency.
Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads made from extra-soft silicone minimise the transmission of minute vibrations while maintaining full compatibility with all standard screws and other mounting systems.
SSO2 Bearing

SSO2 Bearing

The NF-A8 features the further optimised second generation of Noctua's renowned, time-tested SSO bearing. With SSO2, the rear magnet is placed closer to the axis to provide even better stabilisation, precision and durability.
Smooth Commutation Drive 2

Smooth Commutation Drive 2

The latest version of Noctua's advanced Smooth Commutation Drive system ensures superb running smoothness by eliminating torque variations and switching noises. This makes the NF-A8 remarkably quiet even at very close distances.
2 speed settings for maximum quietness

2 speed settings for maximum quietness

Providing 1400 and 1100 rpm speed settings via the supplied adapter, the ULN (Ultra-Low-Noise) version is tailor made for serious silent enthusiasts who demand super-slow running speeds and utmost quietness of operation.
Extensive cabling options

NF-A8 ULN Review

+ They are quiet fans.
+ They have pretty good output for being so quiet.
+ They come in resilient packaging.
+ They come with well-chosen accessories.
Test verdict: "Noctua started with really good fans, and made them better. One thing that strikes you if you handle the old fans is that they are very good fans, so it makes sense that Noctua still sells them in their redux line. But these A-Series fans are even better, and well can they join their big brothers in the A-Series lineup." (Ed Hume, Vortez.net)

NF-A8 ULN Review

As always, sound levels are superb with these fans. While my opinions are subjective, what I found was after 45 dBs, that’s when I felt a fan was getting too noisy. Nothing about the Noctuas sounded too loud while testing them even at max speed, but with the plethora of LNAs and ULNAs to add to the fans, even if you didn’t have a way to control the fans it was unlikely you couldn’t tone them down to where you would be happy with them.
Test verdict: "Overall, I believe Noctua makes an excellent product. There really isn’t anything I can complain about except for the price, and even then the price is understandable. If you need good air flow, low noise and have a small form factor case that needs some better fans, I could definitely recommend what Noctua has to offer here." (Josh Jackson, PureOverclock.com)

NF-A8 ULN Review

(Davide Torno, QWERTYmag.it)

NF-A8 ULN Review

After studying the Noctua A-series Premium fans for the last few weeks, I have begun to understand how each design feature performs their function. As noted in the following paragraphs, each feature adds to the overall function of noise reduction, therefore improving air flow and performance efficiency. The Noctua Advanced Acoustic Optimization Frame has anti-vibration pads in each mounting flange corner. This feature not only reduces vibration noise transferring from the fan, but also into the fan from wobbly case components. The Stepped Inlet Design on the fan case edge turns the air flow from laminar to turbulent, reducing the tonal intake noise. The Inner Surface Microstructures next cause a boundary layer to reduce suction side flow separation as the fan blade tips pass, reducing the blade passing noise with improved air flow. The Flow Acceleration Channels on the fan blades cause the outer blade region air flow to speed up, reducing vortex noise of the fan blades while improving efficiency. Moving the magnet of the Noctua renowned SSO Bearing closer to the axis of the bearing improves stabilization, precision and durability. All of these features and more are packaged with many accessories for each fan, plus Noctua provides a 6 year warranty.
Test verdict: "Noctua A-series Premium fans are looking like the right choice for your new or replacement case fan." (Marvin Purdy, Neoseeker.com)

NF-A8 ULN Review

Aside from the lower temperature, the A9 fans have a more “spread out” sound signature even though it is running at a higher RPM and has lesser high pitched noises across various speeds. The extra padded corners also help in giving extra space when positioned in a “pull” position minimizing noise. The smaller form factors and compact builds are much more common now than ever before with many users opting to build desktops that can be portable for LAN parties or for discreet integration in their living room as an HTPC. The A9 and A8 series fans fit these application well with excellent performance and low noise profiles that is even more flexible if need be. For storage or, spot cooling or component cooling in even tighter spaces, the A4 series offers a rare and impressive feature set that is above what most people would expect from something this small.
Test verdict: "These A-series fans also enjoy the same set of low noise features and premium build quality that the other Noctua fan series provides, including the impressive 6-year warranty and extensive accessory package." (Ron Perillo, Modders-Inc.com)

NF-A8 ULN Review

NF-A8 ULN Review

Stock performance shows a 3 degree drop with the A9 fans on heatsink use and up to 2 degrees under FPU only loads. Noise performance is superior in the NF-A9, despite the higher RPM with a smoother PWM operation and lesser high pitched noises across various speeds. The extra padded corners also help in giving extra space when positioned in a pull position minimizing noise. Ultimately each fan size has its own application depending on the chassis or heatsink applied to, although the smaller A4 5V fan is more suitable for storage cooling but will not look out of place as a chipset or spot cooler as well, especially the 12V version for added flexibility. The 92mm and 80mm A9 and A8 have a very balanced performance as both heatsink fans or case fans with their wide fan blade and excellent static pressure performance. The further lowered noise compared to the B9 and R8 series is a welcome change because the original fans were not particularly troublesome at all when it came to noise either. The integrated padded corners also work very well for noise dampening, especially when positioned as a “pull” fan since there is an added space that minimizes high pitched noises typically present in high-RPM performance fans when placed in this position.
Test verdict: "As with all Noctua fans, they come with premium pricing as they come in premium packaging and feature set so they are not easily affordable. The good thing is that the 6-year warranty found on larger Noctua fans also apply to the A9, A8 and A4 series, as well as the premium accessories that come out of the box." NF-A8 ULN Review

Can I use Low-Noise Adaptors with y-cables / multiple fans?

Yes, Low-Noise Adaptors (L.N.A.s) can be used with y-cables, but please make sure to use one L.N.A. per fan and to place the L.N.A.s between the y-cable and the fans as shown below. Never use one L.N.A. for two (or more fans) by placing it between the mainboard and the y-cable!

Can I use Noctua fans in my system from Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo or other major brands?

Noctua 12V fans comply with the established specifications for standard PC systems issued by Intel and AMD. Systems from Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo or other major brands often deviate from these specifications e.g. by using proprietary fan headers, custom pin-alignments or pin-configurations, different methods of fan speed control, etc. This can lead to compatibility issues when using Noctua fans in systems from said brands. Some of these problems can be avoided with some technical knowledge, but especially BIOS related issues (e.g. errors or shutdowns due to low fan speed) can often not be resolved. As a result, Noctua does not officially support systems from Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo or other major brands.
