Well, I wasn't expecting much different at stock speed and voltage, but then again, I haven't used half of these thermal pastes on a CPU before. I was surprised by the difference in load temperatures of the Noctua NT-H1 compared to the worst in the group, the Vantec thermal paste, 6°C difference just from thermal paste! The gap widens when overclocked and overvolted, and while the NT-H1 is neck and neck with the AS5 at stock, the NT-H1 takes the lead when the CPU is producing a massive heat load. The next nearest thermal paste after AS5 is Thermalright's 'Type 2,' which results in a 4°C higher load temperature. The other pastes in this review are even worse, with the Vantec paste giving a whole 11°C higher load temperature!
Test verdict: "I wasn't expecting the Noctua NT-H1 to outperform Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) during the tests, but it did when the system was overclocked and producing the highest heat load" (Steve Goossens, OverclockersClub.com)

The Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound was a pleasure to work with. It was easy to apply and the performance was great right from the start. No burn-in time was needed with the NT-H1, unlike Arctic Silver products.

For first place, this was a close run all the way through testing. Both of these thermal pastes performed very well. They performed so well during testing, that these two companies kept bouncing between 55°C and 56°C, Gelid's GC-1 and Noctua's NT-H1.
Test verdict: "This thermal Paste was one that took me completely off guard. After seeing temperatures anywhere from 57-70+°C on my CPU, I was not expecting this thermal paste to do any better than what I was seeing. It seems like lately, all of the newer thermal compounds we have tested perform extremely close to one another. The NT-H1 is no different since it performs well but what really stands out with this product is how easy it can be cleaned from your processor. This is just another in a long line of high-performance Noctua products and once again we have to say that Noctua really should be proud of themselves.

Tras haber probado la pasta térmica Noctua NT-H1 en nuestro procesador, podemos decir, que este producto presenta una buena textura para ser aplicado con facilidad mediante su jeringuilla, la cual podemos tapar para evitar que se estropee. En las pruebas hemos obtenido buenos resultados, con lo que la Noctua NT-H1 transfiere de forma exitosa el calor entre el procesador y el disipador, evitando que se sobrecaliente el procesador. Además, también hemos comprobado que esta pasta térmica se puede utilizar perfectamente en Overclocking, permitiéndonos así subir las capacidades del procesador por encima de lo normal sin que éste sufra mucho. Y además, cabe indicar que la pasta térmica Noctua NT-H1 tiene un “tiempo de cura” muy bajo, y si se cuida, puede ser bastante duradera.

Mit der NT-H1 Wärmeleitpaste bietet der österreichische Kühlerspezialist das adäquate Zubehör für ihre eigene Produktlinie an. Die Paste machte während der Tests eine sehr gute Figur und präsentierte sich durchweg positiv. Sehr gute Handhabung und Verteilbarkeit, zeichnen dieses kleine unabdingbare Utensil aus. Auch leistungstechnisch präsentiert sich das Noctua Produkt von der besten Seite. Die schon sehr gute Prolimatech MK-1 wird sogar noch marginal übertrumpft.

Una volta svitato il tappo di protezione ed estratta la pasta notiamo subito la sua colorazione,come da specifica,di colore grigio segno che nella sua composizione sono presenti polveri d'argento e suoi derivati oltre che ad ovviamente polimeri e composti siliconici di cui per motivi tecnici e di concorrenza non ci vengono date le percentuali. La viscosità del composto è otttima ed è adatta per tutti i tipi di applicazione grazie ad una malneabilità eccellente che vi permetterà di stenderla con il metodo che più vi aggrada dito o carta "flessibile" che sia.

From the results above we can see that Noctua's NT-H1 provides consistently better heat transfer at idle and load temperatures than AS5. Sure AS5 requires around 200 hours to cure properly and temperatures will drop steadily during that time, but NH-1 manages to do it straight out of the syringe.

We have seen here that in the case of the compounds we have here, the H1 was clearly the better grease. But it just barely beat out the Arctic Silver 5. But the others pretty much didn't stand a chance.

Which method of application do you recommend for your thermal compounds?

Both our NT-H1 and NT-H2 are very easy to apply and generally don’t need to be spread out manually on the CPU. However, our recommendations differ slightly from paste to paste and from CPU size to CPU size, so please refer to our product manuals and video tutorials for detailed recommendations:

  • How should I remove and clean NT-H1?

    NT-H1 is one of the easiest to clean thermal compounds on the market: Use a dry paper towel or tissue to wipe off, then moisten a paper towel or tissue with a few drops of water to wipe clean. Isopropyl alcohol or cleaning wipes such as NA-SCW1 can be used but are not necessary.

    Why doesn’t Noctua specify thermal conductivity or thermal resistance of NT-H1 and NT-H2?

    While there are some standardised methods for testing the thermal conductivity or thermal resistance of thermal compounds, they do not always guarantee comparable results. What's more, many vendors have started to claim thermal resistance or thermal conductivity specifications that appear simply unrealistic in the light of standardised testing. Last but not least, real world performance of thermal compounds is affected by various other factors such as spreading properties, bond line thickness, mounting pressure or contact quality, so even if there was a common and reliable industry standard for testing the thermal conductivity or resistance of thermal pastes, it would not give customers a clear indication regarding the performance they can expect. For these reasons, Noctua has chosen not to publish specifications for thermal conductivity and resistance. Taking part in a game of claiming exaggerated specifications is not an option for us and we neither want to give specifications that, in the context of this practice, could appear misleading. Instead, we prefer to let independent reviewers judge the performance of our thermal compounds versus competing solutions in order to help customers in making an informed buying decision.
